BYOIB (Build Your Own Ice Cream Bar)-- Because You Can Build Anything Nowadays

And before you say anything, let’s refer back to the Top 15 Bay Area Food Trends of 2015.

What did I say? Forget about BYOPB (build your own poke bowl), we have to make room for the ice cream.

Milk and Wood is the latest to grace the SoFA Market in Downtown San Jose. Borrowing the idea from another famous ice cream bar shop in SoCal (Popbar), Milk and Wood follows the same concept. Pick your flavor. You can choose to have it plain or decked out with toppings for an additional charge and enjoy it in the communal seating area of the SoFA Market.

Sitting inconspicuously on the side when you enter the market, it’s a small stall with a large display case to showcase the different selections of ice cream bars and a cashier and toppings bar on the side.

Milk and Wood

Despite working in downtown San Jose, I have never made the trek over to try Milk and Wood until the weekend I was attending Wobbleland with a few friends. Since we were there for ramen at Konjoe Tei, it only made sense that we also have desserts.

Apparently their two most popular flavors are: Green Tea Kit Kat and Cookies n Cream. They also had other flavors available like Mango Strawberry, Nutella, Pistachio with/without Kit Kat, Thai Tea, Sesame Oreo and etc.

I had a hard time deciding what I wanted and for a while I was playing around with the idea of getting them all-- or at least two.

At the end, I stuck with the Green Tea Kit Kat. I opt for the extra toppings and got the milk chocolate and condensed milk drizzle, topped with almonds and pistachios.

Total Damage: $5

Be warned, the pictures will only come out nice if you didn’t go too heavy handed with your toppings. So pick careful, young grasshopper! That and you may want to wait a few minutes for the chocolate to freeze over and cling onto the toppings.

Otherwise, you’ll end up with a mess.

See how the edges have froze over, but the ones in the center haven't yet?
The Green Tea Kit Kat is different. I was expecting Kit Kat pieces in my ice cream bar, not a whole Kit Kat submerged into my Green Tea Bar. It was a pleasant surprise? The Kit Kat was frozen solid, so this is where I interrupt my blog post with a Public Service Announcement:

“Proceed with caution for kids with loose teeth or for elderly with loose teeth. May cause damage.”

But it’s a fun novelty and a nice addition to the variety of food available at the SoFA Market.

And if you want to try the original that launched a thousand ships-- you’re in luck. Popbar opened up a location in San Jose on Saratoga and are about to open another one next to Gen Korean BBQ.

  1. This place doesn’t have any 'i'm too cool and busy for you' wait staff. As per me, everyone at LA venue here is nice, friendly, and helpful and they really seem to like their jobs there and that is important to me. We had an awesome experience here.
